What is the meaning of a cinematic work from the perspective of senior film directors? How the creative process of filmmaking can be maintained and developed over the years? What prospects and insights in regard to the creative world emerge as time rolls on?

The group exhibition Israeli Filmmakers in the Mirror of Time is a homage to the Israeli cinema and the directors that enriched our lives with their stimulating, thought-provoking films. The exhibition manifests personal points of view of Israeli filmmakers on the topics of cinema, age, gender and time: what is the significance of the cinematic work in a time perspective? How the age and the passing time affect the creative power? What perspective does time bestow to the creative world? 

The exhibition consists of eighteen images of ten leading filmmakers, who are in the second half of their lives. They are all over fifty, thus capable to express a broad perspective on time, age and the film industry. Every image in the exhibition consists of a sentence that reflects the director's thoughts in regard to the intersection of time, cinema and creativity, a closeup of the filmmaker, and a variety of film stills that reflect the filmmaker's creative world. 

The images in this exhibition correspond to each other while uncovering different realms of the Israeli cinema. They engage and resonate each other on the virtual walls while reflecting on some milestones in Israeli cinema.

In the COVID-19 era, in which cinema theatres are closed, this exhibition significantly provides an overview of milestones in Israeli cinema while merging the personal perspectives of its diverse filmmakers. Hitherto, the exhibition reconsiders the meaning of the cinematic creations, and changing cinematic attitudes, and demonstrates a wide range of perspectives. It focuses on Israel, but yet can reflect universal issues concerning cinema, age and time.

The exhibition is a part of an international research, carried out in cooperation with Professor Liat Ayalon from Bar-Ilan University, who is the Israeli PI of the MascAge project funded through the GenderNet-Plus scheme. The exhibition Israeli Filmmakers in the Mirror of Time has been initiated and curated by Dr. Shlomit Lir, a gender fellow researcher at Bar Ilan and Haifa University and a social entrepreneur. This project is conducted in cooperation with Tali Dvir, the initiator of the International Inspiration Day in Israel.
